Southern California has given birth to many famous artists, with main hotspot cities like Compton, Santa Monica, Long Beach etc. However, one city that isn’t recognized enough is Hawthorne. Hawthorne’s artists cultivated a wide selection of genres stemming from their diverse cultural backgrounds, with people of all races and ethnicities. With many emerging artists coming from different cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses, there is clear reason why Hawthorne’s musical output is so diverse. Hawthorne has given birth to many amazing artists but these are my top 3.
Beach Boys
The Beach Boys is an influential band starting in Hawthorne, California. The band was founded in 1961 by three brothers–Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson–along with their cousin and high school friend–Mike Love and Al Jardine. Their original name was “The Pendletones,” proposed by Brain. Brian was the primary songwriter, producer, and vocalist for the Beach Boys. They were popular throughout the 60s and 70s, with their first hit, Surfin’, getting them signed by Capitol Records and inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

Tyler, The Creator
Tyler, the Creator is a music artist that was born and raised in Hawthorne. He created his record label Odd Future in the area too: Los Angeles. He was notably kicked and banned from many clubs and venues as a teenager. Tyler, the Creator produced his first popular mixtape BASTARD in his home. He recorded his video for his mixtapes in Hawthorne park, which exploded on the music scene in 2011 from his debut album GOBLIN, with records like Yonkers and She featuring Frank Ocean. His music group and label formed here also has noticeable artists like Frank Ocean known for his album Blonde, and underground star Earl sweatshirt with his albums like Doris and Just Some Rap Songs. He is a staple of the new music scene and inspires many of the new artists with his piano based beats.
Cuco
Cuco attended Lennox and Hawthorne High School. Being from a Mexican household, he grew up around Spanish ballads which inspired him to pursue music. Based in Hawthorne, he joined his school marching band including a jazz band outside of school. Cuco’s music career took off when he self-produced his first mixtape, Wannabewithu, in 2016, and his second mixtape, Songs4u, in 2017. His breakthrough single gained him 400 million streams in Spotify alone as of 2025. Cuco is the newest wave of music for psychedelic rock with his new album Ridin‘.
Conclusion
Hawthorne is a place not fully represented in mainstream music/media but has given birth to many famous artists. Of course there are plenty more artists that I haven’t talked about, but these were some of my personal favorites.
