New Year, New Surprises

With each passing day, it seems that we are getting closer and closer to the NBA playoffs. With half the season already over, the Golden State Warriors are on top of the throne with 40 wins and only 4 losses. Next to them, the San Antonio Spurs have 38 wins and 6 losses. The Spurs are also currently on a thirteen game win-streak. Looking at the bottom of the standings, the Lakers are currently holding a record of 9 wins and 37 losses. The 76er’s are just below them with only 6 wins and 39 losses. This is by far another disappointing season for the L.A. Lakers, a team that many Laker fans had high hopes for, especially with the return of Kobe Bryant (who is in his final season in the NBA).

Coming off a championship season, the Warriors aren’t only pursuing another championship, but they are also on path to beat the best overall season record of 72-10. set by the 1996 Chicago Bulls. With Luke Walton coaching the team throughout the first half of the season, the return of Steve Kerr, after being absent for almost half of the season due to an injury, can only make the Warriors better.

Looking across the league to the Eastern Conference, Kristaps Porzingis, one of the New York Knick’s newest additions to the team, has been putting up a show for the audience for this season and last 10 games. According to Espn.com, Kristaps Porzingis has been putting up 17.1 points per game with 7.1 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. With many scouts doubting Porzingis’s ability to adapt to the intensity of NBA basketball, Porzingis has shut them up by posting numbers that are only second to the number 1 pick in the draft, Karl-Anthony Towns. This seems to be very significant especially since Porzingis is just a young athlete and has a brighter future ahead of him. He is one player to look out for along with Anthony Towns (Timberwolves), Jahlil Okafor (76ers), and D’Angelo Russell (Lakers) in the coming seasons. For now, it seems like the league belongs to the Warriors, as it looks like no team can challenge them.
