New Music Friday – Week 3
There are many mainstream artists we all know of and listen to on the radio frequently, but what about those that don’t get as much airtime? What do they do? When will you ever hear them? When you reach the weird part of YouTube? Maybe. That’s a good thing though. It allows you to step out of your musical comfort zone and find more talented artists.
Jenny Lee Lindberg, started off at age 23 as the bassist for indie rock band, Warpaint. On December 11th, she released her debut solo album, right on! Jenny Lee’s sound can be described as rock mixed with new wave, a bit of pop, and a splash of gothic undertones that make her sound different from others. Recommended song: “Long Lonely Winter”.
Sunn O))), pronounced just as Sun, is a drone metal band. The band is made up of two members, Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, who formed the band in 1998. What is drone metal? It’s an experimental form of heavy metal that keeps the heavy aspect, while adding long drones of noises and sustained notes to add an eerie effect to the music. I know a lot of people are skeptical about liking metal, but while listening to this music, it gets really intense One advantage I’ve taken out of listening to this type of music is I can really concentrate on my homework while it’s on. They also recently released their album Kannon. Recommended song: “Kannon 3”
Parquet Courts is a post-punk revival band that formed in 2010. If you’re wondering what exactly post-punk revival is, other bands that would be considered being a part of this genre are Interpol, the Hives, the Vines, and the White Stripes. Parquet Courts consists of Andrew Savage and Austin Brown who both play vocals and guitar, Sean Yeaton who plays bass and does the backing vocals, and Max Savage on drums and percussion. Many people may not have heard of them, but they actually ranked #55 on the Billboard charts in the year 2014 for their album Sunbathing Animal. On November 27th, they released an EP titled Monastic Living, which consists of mostly instrumental tracks, but they have a really nice vibe that intrigues listeners. Recommended Song: “Prison Conversion”
Everyone should take the time to venture out of the music they usually listen to or the genres they typically like and try something new. Who knows? You might find your new favorite band!
