On behalf of the newspaper community we were fortunate enough to interview a group of first generation immigrant students from HMSA. We wanted to learn how they overcame the various challenges that they faced.
One of the especially inspiring stories comes from a senior at HMSA. She talked about her experiences and the struggles she endured while moving to the United States from Egypt. The interviewee opened up about her hardships: “I got bullied in middle school due to my English skills and the struggle of communication.” After interviewing her story gave me insight on how she dealt with being treated differently. She mentioned that she’s created goals for herself that would aid her in seizing opportunities. Through her academic coursework so far, she has displayed exceptional grades and knows how to balance her school work and personal life. She’s shown exceptional growth in character since she first came to America, and has made it a priority to succeed in life. She’s overcome many obstacles to be able to be in the position that she is in right now.
Other students we interviewed also mentioned how exciting and challenging their journey has been at HMSA, explaining that the students are excited to go to college. The advice students have provided is that you should always “do your best” and the “best advice you can get is from adults.”
Thank you to all the students who participated, it was great interviewing you. It was very amazing to know that they’ve been successful despite the struggles they endured and how they are excited to move forward in their lives. To learn more check out our video linked below:
