Thoughts on the New School Year

There are a lot of emotions and thoughts surrounding the new school year. When I asked some students to describe the new school year in one word, there were many different answers. There were some negative answers such as exhausting, challenging, stressful, annoying, and just plain bad. There were also some positive answers like, exciting, and pretty good. One kid just gave me a thumbs up. After getting an initial from a good amount of students, I decided to ask some more in depth questions to a select few kids.

The first girl I interviewed was Kelly Fernandez, a freshman at HMSA.

Me: How are you feeling about the new school year?

Kelly: The new year has been good so far.

Me: Are you nervous about anything this school year?

Kelly: I’m feeling nervous about finals, specifically English finals because I don’t know how to prepare.

Me: That’s a valid concern, hopefully you get all the things you need to prepare for midterms.

Me: What are your feelings regarding the new environment, seeing as you are a freshman?

Kelly: It’s a cool environment because most people are nice.

Me: That’s good to hear

Me: How did you feel on the first day of school this year compared to last year?

Kelly: I felt more nervous this year because there were more people. I went to a pretty small middle and elementary school.

Me: Thank you so much for letting me interview you!

The second person I interviewed was David “chancho” Avalos, a sophomore at HMSA.

Me: How are you feeling about the new school year?

David: This school year has been very difficult.

Me: Are you nervous about anything this year?

David: I am feeling nervous about midterms, specifically for chemistry and geometry.

Me: Are you excited about anything this year?

David: I am excited about the end of the school year

Me: Haha, same

Me: Is this year harder than the previous year?

David: Yes, because I have more difficult classes than last year.

Me: Thank you for all your great responses!!!

After that, I interviewed two juniors. Mateo Duran and Lindsay Ramos are also student athletes at HMSA.

Me: How are you feeling about the new school year?

Lindsay: Not great

Mateo: Could be better

Me: What are you nervous about this school year?

Both: Ap classes -specifically AP LANG AP Calc- and there is more pressure on grades, college, and time management.

Me: That seems like it’s not going to be easy

Me: Is there anything that you are excited about for this school year?

Lindsay: The breakfast waffles and soccer season

Finally, I interviewed Abigail Herrera, a senior at HMSA

Me: How are you feeling about the new school year?

Abigail: Stressed because there is a lot to do concerning and time feels like it’s going so much faster

Me: Are you looking forward to anything this school year?

Abigail: I’m looking forward to spending more time with my friends and school events. Also getting accepted to colleges or universities.

Me: Is this year harder than the previous year?

Abigail: Yes, because you have to balance school and college applications

Me: Do you feel confident about your ability to get into college?

Abigail: Yes I do

I’m so glad that I was able to hear  all the different thoughts and feelings surrounding the new school year from several different students. Hearing the different and contrasting perspectives gives you a glimpse into students’ lives.
