As of Jan. 20, Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States. In such little time, many drastic changes have occurred.

One of the most controversial promises Trump made during the course of his campaign was building a wall along the southern border to keep Mexico separate from the United States. Trump is still sticking to his promise and plans to move forward with the construction of his wall. The only change is that Mexico won’t be paying for the construction of the “great border wall.” Instead, money needed to fund the 14 billion dollar project will be coming from U.S taxpayers.

Regarding immigration and refugees, Trump signed an executive order known to the media as a “Muslim ban.” The order bans citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S.. The seven nations are Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and Iran. The United States’ Syrian refugee program, which accepted up to almost 13,000 Syrians in 2016, is now completely suspended during the span of the ban.

This past year, hundreds of protesters went against the approval of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines. Former president Barack Obama blocked the construction of the pipelines. Trump has brought the pipeline constructions back by signing executive actions that advanced the approval of the pipelines. HMSA’s very own Environmental Club had posted pictures and voiced their opinion about being against the construction. “I feel like Trump isn’t considering all of the negative effects this will bring to both the people and the environment,” said Saghar, the treasurer of HMSA’s Environmental club.

Pro-life, or anti-abortion, movements are gaining momentum. Donald Trump has associated himself with being pro-life; he even threatened to defund Planned Parenthood. Protesting crowds full of people in support of the Pro-life movement have increased in size. According to the president of the national anti-abortion group, this year has been the “strongest [the] pro-life movement has been since 1973.”

In response to all of these changes, people have been donating to activist organizations and coming together to protest. Since Trump’s election, and more recently his inauguration, millions of dollars have been donated to organizations. For instance, Planned Parenthood has received much-needed attention after the spike in pro-life movements. The Women’s March was also very successful.

Overall, Trump has brought many changes to America in such a short period of time. The country may feel overwhelmed; however, we are all united and waiting for the next to come.
