2018 Grammy Performances

The 2018 Grammy Awards was a remarkable event that occurred on the 28th of January. The 60th annual award ceremony was hosted by James Corden at Madison Square Garden, located in New York. It’s absolutely insane because the Grammys have been hosted in Los Angeles for many years. Finally, all the people on the West Coast can watch an award show in the afternoon, instead of the evening. For those of you who need an explanation: Because it was aired in New York, the Grammys starts at 5 pm, which is 8 pm (the time it airs at wherever it is being held) for New Yorkers. Now, onto what happened at the Grammys!

Rapper Kendrick Lamar opened up the award show with an absolutely “woke” performance. Included in his performance were rock band U2,and comedian Dave Chappelle. K-dot performed songs from his most recent album. He was also nominated for 7 awards, and won 4. One of the awards he won was Best Rap/Sung Collaboration which he won with Rihanna for their song “Loyalty”.

Lady Gaga had an outstanding performance. She sang her song “Joanne” in memory of her late aunt. She then shifted gears and sang her song “Million Reasons”. She left the crowd stunned! After her performance, she said two powerful words: “Time’s up.”

Little Big Town performed, too! The country music band sang their song “Better Man,” that everyone later found out was written by Taylor Swift. Who would have thought she’s been making lit moves in silence? We see you, Taylor!

Elton John and Miley Cyrus performed together. He had a bedazzled blazer with his name on it, while Miley wore a beautiful red gown. They performed “Tiny Dancer,” with Elton John showing off his piano skills.

Pink performed her new song,”Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken”. Giving out the message to represent women’s rights. Ke$ha also performed her song “Praying”. According to PopBuzz, her song has to do with her mental health. These women truly show that they want to raise awareness about serious situations through their platform.

Childish Gambino graced the crowd with his performance. He performed “Terrified” with J.D. McCrary. For those of you who do not know who he is, he is going to be in the 2019 Lion King live-action movie, and is a cast member on Tyler Perry’s The Paynes. The two shook hands after the performance. Whew! They knew they had done a formidable job.

From her most recent album, Ctrl, SZA performed her song “Broken Clocks”. She was nominated for 6 Grammy Awards but, unfortunately,  didn’t take one home. Despite the loss, her mom and grandmother must be proud of her for even being nominated and getting the opportunity to attend the Grammys!

Bruno Mars and Cardi B came through! They performed the remix of Bruno’s song “Finesse”. Their outfit and entire performance gave a 90’s vibe that evening. Bruno Mars won the most awards that evening! “Bodak Yellow” singer Cardi B was nominated for 2 Grammys, but didn’t win any. Maybe next year?

Another one: DJ Khaled, Bryson Tiller and Rihanna shut it down in New York. They performed their collab song “Wild Thoughts.” Many viewers were pleased with the energetic performance. Many South Africans were happy that Rihanna was representing South Africa, by doing their “gwara gwara” dance, a tradition that many cultures are beginning to inherit.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee performed their hit song “Despacito” at the Grammys. Lo siento, but this is definitely “Song of the Year”! The song has over 4 BILLION views on Youtube.

This year’s Grammys was very pleasant. There was equal representation and racial equality. Different age groups were able to collaborate and execute outstanding performances. Performers also used their platform and voices to speak for groups that are not able to speak for themselves. Hopefully the 2019 Grammy Awards top this years, but could it be any more amazing?!
