Movies to Anticipate in 2018

Kathleen Catamisan, A&E Editor

2017 was a year filled with great movies. Movies of almost every genre came out on the big screen captivating the hearts and attention of people worldwide. Some movies that captured the attention of the world are Pixar’s Coco, which came out on Thanksgiving, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which came out early December, the amazing thriller/horror story of Get Out, and a new adaptation of Stephen King’s It. It seems like these movies (and many more) will be hard to top, but 2018 has a great selection of movies waiting to be released.

Two of the most highly anticipated films of 2018 come from Marvel Studios. Premiering on February 16, we have Black Panther. Black Panther tells the story of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), a young king in charge of the advanced African nation of Wakanda. T’Challa’s throne is challenged by an old enemy, Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who is willing to do anything to steal the throne from T’Challa. Black Panther follows T’Challa as he fights to save his country from war and peril. Black Panther has been on the “To-watch” list of many people, especially on Twitter. Many praise the diversity of the cast, and emphasize the importance of representation in today’s media. Many people, old and young, are excited to see a superhero that is just like them, and that feeling is one of the most important parts of movies. The second film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War. Like Black Panther, Infinity War has been receiving a lot of hype from people on social media and from Marvel fans all over the world. Infinity War follows the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and a team of more superheroes protecting the universe from the villainous Thanos. Many are excited to see their favorite superheroes interact with each other. The movie is set to premiere on May 4th. Though we are many months away from the release date, fans are already coming up with theories, and rumors are flying around about what happens in the film. Many suspect that we will have to say goodbye (or goodbyes) to some of our beloved characters. As the anticipation and hype continues to build  up, we have nothing to do but wait for release dates! *Other Marvel movies coming out this year include Deadpool 2 and Ant-man and the Wasp, with the former not being a part of the MCU.

If live-action action movies aren’t for you, we do have an animated one coming up! Another movie that has been long-awaited (and very overdue) is Incredibles 2! For those of you not familiar with this movie, Incredibles 2 follows the story of a family, the Incredibles, as the parents save the world and as they explore their children’s powers. If you haven’t seen The Incredibles, I recommend you do because it’s a great movie and it will prepare you for the sequel! The Incredibles 2 is set to premiere on June 15. (Fun fact: The first movie premiered in 2004 — it’s been 14 years! The kids who watched it when it first premiered are almost all adults now.)

If action movies aren’t your type of thing, there are many more movies of different genres coming out in 2018. In March, Love, Simon will be releasing in theaters. Love, Simon is not one of your typical romance, drama movies though; it features Simon (Nick Robinson), the main character, and his struggle to come out of the closet. Love, Simon tackles the challenges people of the LGBTQ+ community face each and every day. Love, Simon has already garnered respect on social media for being able to depict the struggle people face and for representing people of the LGBTQ+ community in more ways than one. Love, Simon is a coming-of-age movie, focused on finding yourself and who you really are. Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time is also hitting the big screen this year. A Wrinkle in Time tells the story of Meg, her best friend Calvin, and her peculiar, yet intelligent brother Charles Wallace. They meet three women of a different dimension: Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), who come to inform Meg that her father (a gifted scientist) is in trouble in a different dimension. The only way that he can get out is through the help of Meg and her two other accomplices. The three journey across dimensions with the help of the three women to help combat the evil that has taken her father. Based off of the trailer, A Wrinkle in Time highlights Meg as a teenage superhero figure, and it’s absolutely awesome! The last movie on this list is Solo: A Star Wars Story. The Star Wars franchise is well-known and has been a favorite for generations. Solo provides insight to the life of Han Solo and his first meeting with Chewbacca. Solo travels around the galaxy and encounters an enemy, Lando Calrissian. Solo takes place before Han joins the Rebellion. Solo is expected to release on May 25.

These movies are only a small portion of what is to come in 2018. I will definitely be waiting to watch most of these movies, so make sure to tune into reviews from myself and other writers! Let us know in the comments below what movies you’d like to see or if I left out any major movie coming out this year.
