What to Watch: Everything, Everything

April 28, 2017

Nicola Yoon is the award-winning Jamaican-American author of “Everything, Everything,” a young adult novel that was published in 2015. According to Goodreads, it has already won about five awards, including a few Goodreads Choice Award. This novel isn’t the author’s only book, but the story was so great, it has been made into a movie!

“Everything, Everything” is about a teenage girl named Maddy who lives a very different kind of life compared to most. She is 18 years old and she has never, ever stepped foot outside her home because of an illness she has. Amanda Stenberg, who starred in movies like The Hunger Games and Rio 2, will be playing the role of Maddy. (It’s exciting to watch child stars blossom into talented, young adult actresses!) We then find out that Maddy has a new neighbor–one who happens to be interested in her without even knowing her name or the sound of her voice. Maddy and Olly end up getting each other’s cell phone numbers and their only form of communication is via text message. Nowadays, isn’t it always? But Maddy and Olly here don’t have a choice! Oh, another side-note: Olly is played by Nick Robinson, who starred in Disney’s Frenemies.

So, the main question is: Will Olly get Maddy to finally go outside? And if so, will going outside put Maddy’s life in danger?

The release date of the movie will be May 17, 2017. So, if you would like to read the novel before watching the movie, you’ve got plenty of time. It is a #1 New York Times Bestseller! Critic, Mary Cosala, urges people to not only watch the movie, but also read the book: “Thankfully, this isn’t just another ‘sick teen’ novel but a compelling romance and coming-of-age story told from Madeline’s point of view, and she has a fun, engaging voice.”  So, don’t be lazy; read the book first, then watch the movie!
