Runyon Canyon Trails Close

One of the most popular hiking trails in the Los Angeles area is being temporarily closed. The infamous Runyon Canyon hiking trail is scheduled to be closed from April to July. The temporary closure of hiking trail is due to the Runyon Canyon Water Improvement Project.

A series of 6-inch pipes that run throughout the park are going to be replaced as part of the project. This way, the surrounding community will have improved water quality and reduce pipe breaks. The current pipes are nearly 100 years old and have leaked 20 times just recently. This December, another old pipe in the surrounding area triggered a mudslide. Therefore, best way to prevent further damage and danger is to close the hiking trails for some time.

The Runyon Canyon hiking trails were extremely popular because they were close to the Hollywood sign. If you are planning to go hiking anytime soon, here are some alternative hiking options:

FERN DELL

The Fern Dell hike is a popular entrance into Griffith Park. From Griffith Park, one can make their way up to the Griffith Observatory, which has an amazing view. The hike from Fern Dell to the Griffith Observatory  is approximately 2 miles.

CAHUENGA

The hike to the Cahuenga Peak is approximately 3 miles. At the peak, the “wisdom tree” can be spotted. After a fire in 2007, a single tree stood strong at the peak of the hike and earned the name “wisdom tree.”
