Superbowl Performances

Jaylen Moulton, Staff Writer

Now, it might just be my opinion as an arts and entertainment writer, but I think we all know the most important part of the Super Bowl is not the game itself, but in fact the live performances. Lady Gaga performed the national anthem, while Bruno Mars, Coldplay, and Beyonce all played during the halftime show. I don’t usually listen to these artists, but it’s kind of impossible to miss the Super Bowl halftime show.

Lady Gaga started off the Super Bowl by singing our national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Now, I’ve never really liked her music or her to be honest, but her voice is another thing. She’s got a great voice and I think it fit our national anthem perfectly. I could hear a lot of passion in her voice and I’m sure it made everyone feel patriotic. Although it was the shortest performance of the whole show, I can definitely say it was the best.

The halftime show started with Coldplay and sorry, a lot of you are going to get mad at me right now, but I think they are one of the most overrated bands. No, I don’t like Coldplay and I definitely don’t like the very  overplayed “Viva La Vida” song they played at the Superbowl. Along with that song they also sang “Paradise” and a newer song called “Adventure of a Lifetime” which is like most Coldplay songs: boring. Sorry not sorry. Coldplay later on, with Beyonce and Bruno Mars, sang “Fix You” with a change of lyrics. Highlights of the last 50 years of the Super Bowl Halftime performers was shown in the background.

Going back to Bruno Mars performance with “Uptown Funk,” I think it’s a catchy song that can definitely make the crowd go wild, but the song sounds way worse live. It’s a shame when artists sound good in their studio recording and it’s obvious they won’t necessarily be able to sound as good as that live, but they shouldn’t sound significantly worse live. I mean this is the Super Bowl, so this should be a pretty big deal, not just any other performance. I will say however, that I did like the dancing part of his performance.

Now probably my worst unpopular opinion regarding the Superbowl was Beyonce’s performance. I’m going to have to say sorry not sorry again, but that was horrible. That song was not catchy at all. How can you really dance to  that? Speaking of dancing, I’ve just gotta say that dancing was totally inappropriate. I mean was it really necessary? I might be the only one who thinks that, but it honestly bothered me. I think an event like the Super Bowl doesn’t need to have dancing like that when many kids and teens watch it. Along with the dancing, Beyonce’s outfit was yet another one of her leotards. I wonder what Beyonce is going to wear to the Super Bowl–Oh, oh, it’s just another one of her overused leotards. I’ve seen it over and over again. You’ve got to pull something else from your wardrobe, and I don’t mean another leotard.

Did you miss anything during the Super Bowl halftime show? No, not really, but if you want to check out at least one of the performances I really recommend checking out Lady Gaga sing the national anthem.
