The Golden Ball

The time is drawing closer and until the Ballon d’Or is presented to the best player in the world. Who will it be, Neymar Messi or Ronaldo? All three players had great seasons, but only one can be named the best player in the world.

The 2014/15 season for these three players was superb, all three players scored loads of goals and won trophies. Cristiano Ronaldo however, only won one trophy, and that was in 2014, it was the FIFA Club World Cup. Messi and Neymar however, had an even better season than the Ronaldo. In the 2014/15 season they won five trophies with FC Barcelona. Between May of 2015 and December of 2015 they won the  La Liga (the League Title), the Copa del Rey(Domestic Cup), the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. In 59.5% of people said Messi would win, a poll,  26.6% of people said that Cristiano Ronaldo would win and 13.9% of people said that Neymar would win the award.

But the real question is, how did these players do last season. Well here are the stats.

In the 2014/2015 season Lionel Messi played 57 games and scored 58 goals in all competitions, according to sportskeeda.com. That’s about 1.01 goals per game, however this isn’t Messi’s best, he’s scored way more goals, for example in the 2012/13 season he “broke…Gerd Müller’s record of 85 goals scored in a calendar year” according to barcablaugranes.com. but in comparison to what human players score, it’s amazing. Not only did Messi help lead his club to five trophies, he also helped lead his country into the final of the Copa America 2015, which was being hosted in Chilé. Sadly,  Messi could not secure the victory and ended up losing to the hose, Chilé on penalties. This seems to be a curse on the Argentine because a similar thing happened to him in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final where Argentina lost to Germany 1-0 in extra time.

Neymar also had a great season for Barcelona, goal scoring-wise. Neymar scored  38 goals in 50 games for Barcelona, according to fcbarcelona.com. Neymar also participated in the 2015 Copa America, but he was not able to lead his country success, leading them to be eliminated by Paraguay on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s season was not too impressive, he did win his usual trophy, the Pichichi. the Pichichi trophy is given to the the top goalscorer in La Liga. In the 2014/15 season Ronaldo scored 61 goals in 54 games in all competitions, according to realmadrid.com, that’s an average of 1.12 goals per game. That’s an outstanding feat, but goal-scoring isn’t enough to win someone a Ballon d’Or. In a poll

The winner of the Ballon d’Or will be announced on January 11, 2016, if Messi wins it will be his 5th, if Ronaldo wins it will be his 4th, equaling Messi’s record, and if  Neymar wins, it will be his first. Where will you be when the awards are given out? School most likely, but make sure to check online and see who the best player in the world is.
