Obsession follows a young man named Bear who uses a magical toy called a one-wish-willow in order to gain the affection of his coworker Nikki. However the wish takes a tragic turn and becomes a nightmare for Bear. Many praise the film for its unique themes like relationships and loneliness. Rather than relying on cheap jumpscares, the film uses awkward social moments in order to make the audience feel uncomfortable. Director Curry Barker started his career on YouTube making skits and short films. He went viral in 2023 with the horror short The Chair and in the found footage film Milk and Serial. He then began filming Obsession soon in 2024 after and released it May 15 2026. Barker produced the movie with a miniscule budget of 1 million dollars and it has still managed to gross 150 million dollars at the box office. Barker used Obsession to highlight the selfishness of trying to manipulate another person’s feelings in order to feel loved. Because of this relatable moral lesson, the film heavily resonated with viewers and the media which lead to its immense popularity.
