Ariana Grande’s Return: “No Tears Left to Cry”
May 16, 2018
Ariana Grande is back and she’s here to stay! On April 19, 2018, Ariana released “No Tears Left to Cry” with an innovative video on YouTube! In its first week, it received 51.7 million views. Compared with Ariana’s last hit “Side to Side”, “No Tears Left to Cry” drew 20 more million views from fans. It’s her biggest music video launch!
After Ariana’s tour was interrupted by the Manchester bombing in 2017, she took a break from releasing music. “No Tears Left to Cry” hints that she has recovered and is ready to move on from the terrible incident. Many believe the song represents her healing process and growth since the shooting. Though, the connection has not been confirmed. Despite this, “No Tears Left to Cry” has an upbeat tone and is not meant to be a gloomy song.
Ariana begins the song with a slow tempo and as it fastens, she sings, “Ain’t got no tears left to cry/So I’m pickin’ it up, pickin’ it up”. Ariana is done crying and she’s ready to get back on the charts! To confirm her official return, Ariana returned to Twitter on April 17. She last tweeted “see you next year” in December 2017. She also hinted that her new album is in progress and will be released in 2018.
I decided to ask a few HMSA students about their opinion on the song/music video and here’s what I recieved:
“No Tears Left to Cry is a special anthem with a meaning behind it. After the Manchester bombing, Ariana took some time off which totally paid off because we now have this great song charted to #1 in 60 countries! I learned every part of the song in 30 minutes.” -Summer Nguyen, Junior
“It’s the beginning of a wig-snatching era. Such a masterpiece.” -Ashley Santoyo, Senior
“Amazing, wonderful, beautiful, show stopping, revolutionary, never been done before. Ariana has come to save pop music.” -Jordy Magallanes, Junior
“No Tears Left to Cry is definitely a bop. The song gives me “bonfire at sunset with your closest friends” but also “getting ready for a night out” vibes. What more could a song offer?” – Diana Davalos, Senior
“I’m not a huge fan of Ariana, but I have to admit that her song is good and very catchy.” – Hailey Jones, Junior
“The music video for No Tears Left to Cry is imaginative, but it does not convey the message of the song clearly.” -Ximena Orozco, Senior
“The music video was confusing at first, but by the end of it, I came to understand the message she intended to get across. The upside down world that she included in the video represents the chaos and confusion that is present in the world today.” -Amelia Navarro, Senior
Students loved the song for its beat and others appreciated its underlying message. On the other hand, some students did not understand the music video and found it confusing. Overall, here at HMSA, Ariana Grande has critics and supporters!
