Paper Town for a Paper Girl
November 7, 2017
Quentin Jacobsen has been in love with the amazing Margo Roth Spiegelman for as long as he could remember. Quentin believes everyone gets a miracle; his miracle was Margo Roth Spiegelman moving in to the house next to him out of all subdivisions in Florida. Margo has loved a good mystery since she was 9 years old, when she and Quentin found a dead body in the park. Nine-year old Margo cracked that case wide open, discovering it was actually a suicide. That was the last time Margo spoke to Quentin, nine years ago. Now, it’s senior year, and all Quentin wants to do is graduate with his best friends, Ben and Marcus (AKA “Radar”). Fate had a change of plans for Quentin because what seemed like a regular day unfolded into a great adventure with the one and only Margo Roth Spiegelman. Margo broke into Quentin’s room to ask for his help to “right some wrongs and wrong some rights.” Quentin never knew that would be the last time he would see Margo. One epic adventure leads to an even bigger adventure; the search to find Margo.

If I had to summarize Paper Towns by John Green in a few words it would be: Not everything is what is seems, and Margo understood that. Consider Margo: her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Jase, was a complete lie. He cheated on Margo with her supposed “best friend.” Quentin didn’t know; in fact, no one knew. Personally, I liked how Quentin thought finding Margo was more important than his prom and graduation. I loved how John Green portrays Margo in his novel as well. Margo is someone you want to be friends with, someone you just want to be around. She isn’t afraid to be herself, to get in trouble, or even to go on a big adventure just for the heck of things. She is very outgoing, and that is what I love about her. Quentin’s character is the total opposite: He is obedient and shy, and following Margo Roth Spiegelman on an adventure at midnight was not something he was prepared for.
I recommend Paper Towns to those looking for a novel full of friendship, love, and adventure. A personal favorite moment would be when Quentin and his friends go on a road trip from Florida to New York just to find Margo. They experience awkward moments throughout the road trip in gas stations, such as when Ben had to pee in a car.
