“Everything Everything” Book Review by Jimena Prado

What if you were not allowed to leave your house because you could die? Madeline Whittier is not your typical teenage girl. She has a condition that makes her allergic to everything in the world. She lives in a house with oxygen filters that allow her to breathe, and her only friend is Carla, her nurse. Madeline is 18 years old, but she has never stepped outside of her house. She takes classes online instead of going to a public school. Maddy didn’t know what to expect when a new family moved next door; she didn’t know what to expect when she met Olly. There he stood in all black: black shirt, black jeans, black shoes, and a black cap. Maddy never imagined this one boy would change her life completely.

*Spoilers Ahead* Everything, Everything is the amazing life story of a girl who took a risk for love. Madeline Whittier never took a chance; she lived and that was it. However, once Olly came into her life, she became a different person: adventurous and taking more risks than ever before. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the resolution. The story vaguely ends with Maddy visiting New York to reconnect with Olly for a few months after he left. I felt this was an important moment, and needed more details of what happened as they saw each other again.

Despite the ending, I would completely recommend Everything, Everything. It is an amazing novel, and I enjoyed the cute moments Olly and Maddy shared. My favorite moment would have to be when Maddy saw how badly Olly’s father treated him, took a risk, and ran outside to help him, knowing it would kill her.
