Time to Learn About Earth Day!
The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970, when Senator Nelson of Wisconsin showed concern over environmental issues not being addressed in politics. Today, Earth Day is celebrated in more than 193 countries every 22nd of April. Throughout the world, tons of programs and events are set up to demonstrate and inform the public about environmental projects.
Earth Day is run by the Earth Day Network, which has a goal of building the world into the largest environmental movement. The Earth Day Network’s overall mission is to diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement throughout the world. This year, spreading awareness is specifically important because of President Trump’s administration and the controversy over global warming.
The holiday is celebrated in many different cities. Downtown Los Angeles is hosting multiple free events to promote the importance of Earth Day. Here at HMSA, the Environmental club set up activities for the school to celebrate Earth Day a day earlier on Friday, April 21. Posters were put up around the school to advertise and promote the event. The club used part of fourth period to set up multiple booths on the blacktop for the event at lunch. The multiple tables and booths were filled with games and activities relating to the well-being of the environment. The games were carnival-like and different prizes were given to those who participated. Students and teachers showed their support for the holiday. Saghar N., Environmental Club treasurer, said, “Overall we want to celebrate the Earth and appreciate it for all it has given us.”
It’s easy to get carried away with the idea of Earth day, but it’s also important to take care of the earth we live on and spread awareness about our environment every single day. It would not be right to celebrate the earth for a single day, instead it should be a lifelong habit to look out for the earth we live on. Even though everyday doesn’t have the label, everyday is Earth Day.
