10 Years of “The Pursuit of Happyness”
On the 15th of December 2016, an inspirational film was released. It is based on a true story of a man named Chris Gardner. The person who plays Gardner is Will Smith, who showed he can play any role that comes his way. The Pursuit of Happyness made about $300 million worldwide!
Chris Gardner was simply an ordinary married man who wanted to live a good life with his wife (Thandie Newton) and son (Jaden Smith). His wife worked as a hotel maid, and he was constantly shifting in between jobs. Some days were good; some days were not so good. He would apply for a job, but not get hired. His son attended a daycare, but with his father working in unstable jobs and his mother making very little money, how could he remain in the daycare without paying?
During his job search, Chris befriended a successful man who also had a son. The man invited him to places such as sport events, and Chris began to act unlike himself because he was embarrassed of the lifestyle he was living. His friend asked him about his car and his son quickly blurted out that he and his father did not own a car. Chris quickly and angrily looked at his son and said, “We do…we have a car.”
After getting fired from the job that paid him little to no money, the wife of Chris Gardner decided to call it quits in their marriage. You’re probably thinking, “Whatever happened to ‘For Better or Worse?” Unfortunately after his wife left, Chris got evicted and started living in many shelters with his young son, who at the time, was under the age of ten.
After being unemployed, homeless, abandoned by his wife, jailed for not paying parking tickets, and in shelters, Chris Gardner is now a successful stockbroker and entrepreneur. Throughout the sleepless nights he had probably thought of giving up, he did not go that route. According to The Richest, his estimated net worth is $60 million dollars!
The movie is a good way to show people to appreciate the things we have and that the bad things that happen in life are temporary. In the end, life does get better.
“Don’t ever let somebody tell you can’t do something,” Gardner says.
