Pray For The World
April 8, 2016
Recently, we have witnessed bombings and violence from all around the world. For most of us, there is nothing to do but spread our thoughts and prayers and raise awareness. All throughout the news, social media, and people talking in general, we have heard about the terrorist attacks in France and Belgium.
This past November, 129 people were killed and dozens were left injured when seven terrorists carried out shootings and bombings throughout the French capital. A few weeks ago, more than 30 people were killed and more than 200 were left wounded after explosions struck the international airport and metro station in Brussels.
There was an overflow of love shown to Paris and Brussels through the constant news coverage and social media posts, as well as other forms. Lots of love instantly spread around the world; So many heartwarming thoughts and prayers were sent out to both countries. The attacks in both countries were tragedies, and the loss of civilian lives was unnecessary and brought out an inhumane part of society. However, both the coverage and love both countries received are a step towards the right direction.
But we must not forget about the rest of the world. Two days before the Paris bombings, 43 people died in terrorist attacks in Beirut, and over 200 were left injured. The following day a bomb at the funeral of a Shia fighter killed 18 people. A week before the Paris bombings, a funeral in Baghdad was bombed killing 19 people and injuring over 30. A few weeks ago there was a suicide bombing in Pakistan, which killed over 70 and injured over 300.
However these attacks in Beirut, Baghdad, and Pakistan didn’t receive half of the attention and concern of those in Paris and Belgium. There were no trending hashtags on Instagram or Twitter, there was no constant updating and coverage in the news. Why aren’t these parts of the world covered as much as Paris and Brussels? Are those attacks really any different than those in Brussels and Paris?
We must pray for Paris and Belgium, but the rest of the world as well.
