On october 8th, 2024 mayor Alejandro Arcos, of Guerrero state was beheaded just six days after taking office. Civilians in the area blame the cartel terrorizing it for their heinous crimes against innocent politicians. Many including the mayor’s wife claim that he was killed for his political beliefs and wanting to exploit the Cartel instead of helping their agenda.
According to NBC News, there have been other politicians who have been attacked or murdered by the nearby cartel terrorizing Guerrero state. Francisco Tapia, the new Chilpancingo city government’s secretary, was previously shot to death just three days before the mayor. Politicians who are believed as uncorrupted are murdered in order to keep cartel empires running according to their liking. It’s believed most politicians in Guerrero state abide with them to avoid receiving threats. This system results in the fear of cartel rule.
For a while Guerrero has been considered a very dangerous country. Not only for civilians living their ordinary life but it has become the death state for uncorrupt politicians running for positions and even journalists who tell the story, one example involving 5 Mexican journalists who were shot while covering southern Guerrero.
Despite the constant fear of death, few politicians stand to fight against this evil. Alejandro Moreno, head of the Mexican Political party, has been investigating the deaths of both Alejandro Arcos and Francisco Topa to bring their murders to justice. Moreno states, “This situation is out of control, we must stop these murders.” After this statement, 6 candidates running for the public office were assassinated during Mexico’s 2nd election.
With the assassinations in place, this allows crooked politicians to rise to power leaving good politicians in the shadows. It seems Guerrero will be under cartel control for decades to come as they overtake any action within the state.
Although the investigation is still ongoing, if you want more in-depth information regarding the death of Alejandro Moreno, see here for more information.
