On May 5th, the Hawthorne Math & Science Academy boys varsity volleyball team lost Saturday’s away playoff match against Garden Grove by a score of 3-0. The match was part of the 2018 CIF Southern Section Boys Volleyball Championship – Division Five tournament. According to MaxPreps.com, the Argonauts now have a fourteen to nine record. Their next game is against Avalon on Tuesday, May 8. Garden Grove will face off against a Lancers team, who had just finished with a 3-0 league win over Liberty Christian.

Now let’s take a quick overall look at the HMSA boys varsity volleyball team’s overall standing and league stats. They are 8-8 overall, with a league record of 4-2. At home, they hold a record of 4-3, while away, they stand with a record of 4-5. They are also now with zero wins and a loss, for the playoff standings. While the loss was a tough one for the team, Erick M., a senior here at HMSA, had a few thoughts on the recent game.

In a recent interview, Erick talked about facing off against a number one ranked team in their division. He goes on to say that they “started off with passion and will to win the game.” According to the team, Garden Grove went on a slight run and barely beat the Aviators in the first set. Erick assured that in “the second set we kind of slowed down a bit and they began to make better plays and take advantage of our mistakes. In the third set we fought hard. It was either win or go home, and we left it all on the court.” Unfortunately, the team’s efforts were not sufficient enough to overcome Garden Grove. Erick also added on by saying, “In the end, we were able to compete against highly ranked teams, but [the team’s] small mistakes got the worst of us.” Despite a tough and terrible loss, the HMSA boys volleyball team look to improve and learn from their recent loss. It has been quite the season, but practice is the only key in helping the team in their success. We will just have to wait and see next time!
