HMSA’s baseball team started their season with a positive mindset and ready to battle on the baseball field. On February 27, the baseball team played against Environmental Charter at Rodger Anderson Park. Although they didn’t take the victory, they look forward to the season and they are confident that they will see tremendous improvement throughout the season.

The baseball team had an equal performance to Environmental Charter during the first two innings. They were proving to be a challenge to Environmental Charter. In the top of the first innning, co-captain Anthony Hernandez scored a home run. Don Mojica pitched in the bottom of the first two innings. However, Environmental’s team scored, making the score 1-2 at the end of the first inning, in favor of Environmental Charter.

During the second inning, there wasn’t much activity going on in the field. The Aviators didn’t score. Environmental Charter wasn’t a threat to HMSA’s opportunity to win either. The Aviators were determined to leave it all out on the field and score against Environmental Charter in the next inning. Both co-captains of the team, Anthony Hernandez and David Lopez, scored in the top of the third inning. However, Environmental came back and scored  5 more times against the Aviators. The score by the end of the third inning was 3-7. The next pitcher after the third inning was sophomore, Shyam Patel.

The Aviators, however, did not allow the score to discourage them from doing their best on the field. They maintained a positive attitude for the remaining of the game even though Environmental Charter scored 6 more times by the end of the fifth inning. David Lopez closed the game by pitching from half of the fifth inning to the end of the game. The score at the end of the fifth inning was 3-13; therefore, the game was over. HMSA got mercy rules as Environmental was ahead by 10 runs.

The baseball team noticed so much improvement from past years in communication, performance, and effort. Co-captain, Anthony Hernandez said, “I think compared to other years, we will do really well this season because our hittings have improved and our communication. But, only the rest of the season can speak for itself”. The team will continue to practice hard for their next games. Anthony also said, “Our coach puts us through various stations and warm-up techniques to avoid injuries as much as possible. We prepare for games with practice. I think that we show what we practice in our games; it’s just a matter or minimizing the errors”. The team is looking forward to the rest of the season and have no doubt that they will keep improving throughout.
