We are all aware that nowadays award shows function as more than a celebration of the winners for Best Actor or Best Series. Award shows like the Golden Globes provide celebrities with a platform, other than the continuous use of Twitter, to address current issues. Besides that, we see historic winners and great fashion. These are just a few aspects of the annual Golden Globes experience that make it so special every year. Now to naming the top memorable moments of this year’s Golden Globes:

  1. #METOO

The ME TOO Movement took center stage at this year’s Golden Globes.  As you may already know from the many headlines and troubling stories, the ME TOO movement deals with sexual misconduct that occurs in Hollywood. Without getting into too much detail, many female artists have come out with their personal accounts of abuse and/or harassment by higher ranking males in the industry. All those in attendance showed their support for this growing movement by wearing black. Black symbolized how they stood in solidarity against this malicious aspect of Hollywood.

  1. OPRAH IS BACK

Oprah took the stage on this fine evening to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award recognizing her achievements in the art of acting as well as her long career as a talk show host. Even before she walked up to the stage and began her speech, both the audience in attendance and at home were aware that she would be more than simply thanking those who have helped her throughout her career. Oprah began by describing a moment when she was a young girl, watching the Golden Globes, awed by the elegant presence of Sidney Poitier who was being honored that night. As the first African-American woman to receive such an award, she hopes that many young girls are inspired at that very moment to fight past challenges that will arise when working towards achieving their dreams. Last but not least, she shared the story of Recy Taylor, a woman who was sexually assaulted many years ago. She then took her case to the NAACP, where Rosa Parks was actually one of the officials investigating the crime. Sadly, Recy Taylor had passed away about 10 days prior to the Golden Globes and had to live in a world that still constituted of dominating and brutal men. With this, Oprah showed her strong support for the ME TOO movement and demanded that woman continue to fight for their rights.

  1. NATALIE SPEAKS OUT

Another moment that surprised many were a few words said by the esteemed actress, Natalie Portman. Even though her words told the truth, the crowd did not expect them. As she was about to announce the winner for Best Director along with actor Ron Howard, she made a bold statement that made most of the audience chuckle. Ron Howard stated, “We are honored… to be here to present the award for Best Director,” which was followed by Natalie so confidently saying, “And here are the all-male nominees.” Natalie has made herself known as one of the strongest supporters of this movement, and as you can see, she is still deeply passionate about it.

As a young female, watching this year’s Golden Globes made me proud. I can say that women dominated this year’s Golden Globes. These are only three of the most memorable moments. There were many other dazzling highlights, but these three shine in my eyes. I cannot wait until next year’s Golden Globes! I am sure it will be filled with as many or possibly more memorable moments like these.
