The 50th Anniversary of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”

There is “nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see” in this short special! Many of us have grown up watching the Charlie Brown holiday specials for Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even more. The specials are a great time to bond with family, rekindle past memories, or just get into the holiday spirit! They create joy and warmth for the child within all of us!

This year is a special year for the iconic Halloween special! October 27, 2016 marks its 50th anniversary. It first premiered on that day, 1966 and is the 3rd of numerous Charlie Brown specials. To think after 50 years, it still remains one of the most beloved Halloween specials; the show is absolutely spectacular! This special has touched the hearts and lives of many generations.

The Halloween season may be over, but the joy these specials bring lasts forever. No matter what day you decide to watch a Charlie Brown special, whether it fits the season or not, it is a particularly an enjoyable activity. With friends, family, or alone, the specials never cease to put a smile on anyone’s face.

For those of you who haven’t watched the special before, you’re definitely missing out. The special focuses on one of the Peanuts: Linus. He is an innocent, little boy with an optimistic outlook on life. Every Halloween he sits out in the pumpkin patch in hopes that he will encounter the Great Pumpkin. What is the Great Pumpkin you might ask? He is the Halloween equivalent of Santa Claus. If you’ve ever believed in anything as a little kid, the way Linus feels about the Great Pumpkin will remind you of a time when you were as innocent as he was. The true appeal to the special is the focus on the innocence of childhood and something that many of us lose when we become older: hope.

Charlie Brown is a great special for the Halloween season and one I watch annually. The next time you’re complaining about how bad you think your Halloween was, remember at least you’re not saying “I got a rock” after all your friends receive candy!
