The 2016 LA Times Festival of Books

The 21st annual LA Times Festival of Books was held at USC on April 9th and 10th, 2016.

Performances, book signings, and interviews were held. While Saturday was a gloomy and rainy day, Sunday was a beautiful, sunny day for everyone to attend the book festival.

I attended the event with my friend Ashley Jimenez, a fellow HMSA student, on Saturday, April 9, 2016. We walked around and we were quickly interested in the comic book booth. There were action figures and stacks of comic books

available to buy. We saw this man working on his piece of art. Food trucks were at the festival also. There was a lot of diversity among the selection of books. Authors such as Maria Alexander, Spencer Anderson, Sam Alden, Betsy Amster, Julissa Arce, James Beran, Ruth Chan, and more attended the festival. Musical acts such as the Grace Gospel Choir, Spritely, Brett Fromson, and Small Shelter all rallied up the audience entertaining them and bringing joy.

The day may have ended, but that doesn’t mean the fun did.  Entertainment activities were held in the evening. On Saturday, a live talk show was held by Sara Benincasa for authors and comedians, which included John Scalzi and Maris Kreisman. At 8 PM, the spring musical “A Little Night Music” was held. At 8:30 PM, the fifth annual Book Drop Bash was held.

Ashley Jiminez said “[she] really liked the comics at the comic booth but [I] left to get chicken nuggets because the food trucks were too expensive.”

Hopefully the Festival of Books will continue to live up to its legacy and expectations in the following years.
