McDonald’s Sued For Falsely Advertising “Cheesy” Mozzarella Sticks

A couple of days ago, a man from California decided to sue McDonald’s restaurants for falsely advertising their new mozzarella sticks. This man, Chris Howe, claims that the mozzarella sticks are not made with real cheese, as the advertisement says.

The commercials advertise that the food is made with “100% real and melty mozzarella cheese.” According to Fox News, Howe and the other plaintiffs found that 3.76% of the product is made with a starch filler. Starch is a substance found in many everyday foods such as potatoes, rice, and bread. However, starch is not one of the ingredients in dairy-based products, like cheese. Also, Howe found that the ingredients in the mozzarella sticks included “more water and starch than federal food labeling laws allow.” This was found through a test conducted to find the number of ingredients put into this product.

As of now, McDonald’s restaurants have not given in to the claims. They are still fighting that their initial advertisement was correct and that their mozzarella sticks are made specifically with “100% low moisture part skim mozzarella cheese.” I asked Junior Erika Guzman to see what she thought about this complicated situation: “Considering it is against the law to put starch in the cheese, I wouldn’t buy [the mozzarella sticks], even though I do go to McDonald’s.” I’m sure many people feel this way after being informed of the lawsuit.

Howe and the others going against McDonald’s are suing the fast-food restaurant chain for a total of $5 million dollars. The lawsuit is still currently underway, but it is doubtful that McDonald’s will keep these cheesy snacks on the menu for too long.
