Snowstorm Harms the East Coast

The East Coast is going to need to stay warm due to the crazy blizzard going on. Many parts in the eastern United States are being covered with at least 25 inches of snow. It’s such a big storm that it was even seen from space.

All the flights have been canceled, and above-ground subways have been stopped in New York. If you were planning on seeing a Broadway show, then it’s going to have to wait. All Broadway performances have also been canceled because of the blizzard. In the Mid-Atlantic, most of the airports were shut down as well. Washington and Baltimore also had mass transit services postponed for the weekend. There has been major traffic caused by the storm in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. In Pennsylvania, there was an accident that happened Friday night. All the vehicles were stuck on the road from Friday night to Saturday afternoon. Guard members were sent to help move stuck trailers that blocked about 11-mile stretch of Interstate 77, just north of Charleston.

On Saturday, the storm caused more than 150,000 people to be without power. The states were hit pretty hard with a combination of ice, strong winds, and snow. As if snow wasn’t enough, flooding is another big issue as the storm started heading out to sea. New Jersey has been issued a warning by the National Weather Service. Some parts of Jersey Shore have already seen some flooding. A city just coast from Atlantic City, Margate City, has already been covered with water.  Many people in North Wildwood, farther south from the coast, had to evacuate and the people that stayed in their homes not knowing what was occurring had to be rescued, according to Mayor Patrick Rosenello.

I would never expect snow here.

— Xochitl Arquieta

I asked sophomore Xochitl Arquieta a few questions about her thoughts on having a snowstorm here and the effects it would have on our environment. Would the situation be good or bad? Here’s what Xochitl had to say: “I feel like having a snowstorm would be amazing but it would also have to depend on how much amount of snow were to fall.” She felt that too much snow would cause too many accidents. “I would definitely be surprised if there was a snowstorm due to it barely raining. I would never expect snow here,” Xochitl added on. Xochitl also thought the snowstorm would help with the drought. She felt that people would be freezing but would bring excitement as well.
