Why Does Valentine’s Day Exist?

Valentine’s Day is around the corner. This year, it will be on Sunday, February 14th.

What is Valentine’s Day all about? Valentine’s Day is a day when people express love to their family members, friends, and/or significant other.

People don’t express their love like they would any other day. People find the courage to give their crushes flowers and chocolates, and they give their significant others promises and engagement rings. Keep in mind that these courageous acts don’t always go to plan. Don’t worry; there’s always next year.

Talking about Valentine’s Day, where does it even come from? According to history.com, there are several common theories.

One theory involves the remembrance of the famous Saint Valentine’s death. Valentine was a third-century Roman priest who was imprisoned and executed for illegally marrying soldiers that were supposed to remain single. Emperor Claudius II wanted the soldiers’ complete and genuine loyalty.

Having a “Valentine” arose from Valentine’s stay in prison. According to telegraph.co.uk, Valentine wrote a letter for the jailer’s daughter on execution day. The signature on this letter read, “from your Valentine.”

Another theory suggests that Valentine’s Day was invented to cleanse and purify the sinful celebration of Lupercalia. According to telegraph.co.uk, Lupercalia was celebrated from February 13 to February 15. Men would randomly choose a temporary female partner by picking from a jar. Eventually, the entire celebration transitioned from a focus on enhancing fertility to a focus on physical pleasure.

No one knows for sure why Valentine’s Day exists. Its origin will forever remain a mystery.
