What is No Shave November Really About?

Kathleen Catamisan, Staff Writer

When people think of No Shave November, the first thing that comes to mind is some trend on Instagram or Twitter. Throughout the years, No Shave November lost its meaning. Many view it as a challenge to go without shaving for a month. But No Shave November isn’t a challenge; it’s something more important and elaborate.

No Shave November was started by the Hill family in 2009  to honor their father who died of colon cancer. As the cause became more well-known, many joined in. Supporters of No Shave November believe that not shaving allows participants to embrace the hair they have and grow, which many cancer patients lose during their treatment. In addition, the participants donate the money they would’ve spent on razors or salon appointments to the cause. According to https://www.no-shave.org/, participants have raised over $2 million. Every year, the cause continues to grow and raise more money for cancer prevention and education.

Initially, I wasn’t entirely sold out on the movement. At first, I saw No Shave November as a trend on Twitter and Instagram and thought it was completely unhygienic. I thought that it was just something that people did for the fun of it. I decided to search up the start of the No Shave November movement. Looking at the results, I was astonished to find that it was so much more than a trend.

No Shave November is more than just a fun trend you should try out because you saw it on Instagram. No Shave November is a unique way to help others and raise cancer awareness. It’s also a great way to remember that the smallest things are what we should we be thankful for. As November progresses, remember to be grateful for everything you have, even if it’s something as simple as your hair!
